NIMR Amani posses a good design and modernized insectary with all the three main considerations: the well-being of the mosquitoes, the safety of the staff and inhabitants of the area and structural strength and durability of the insectary and its equipment. Its main function is to maintain Colonies for different mosquito strains responsible for transmission of different diseases for the sake of controlling. Therefore, it ensures for availability of mosquito samples for the requirement of the testing facility and different program and surveys in both Laboratory and field site. Currently it manages to hold all the three main mosquito species, Anophelines both susceptible and resistant strains, culicine (susceptible strains) and Aedes (susceptible strains). They have been maintained, with their historical profiles kept from the first batch to date, maintained in good condition to ensure they are healthy for testing. Also, biometric measurement and Resistant testing is done after every three months to control their fitness and susceptibility status.
Safety at NIMR Amani insectary is another area of concern. This Insectary contains mosquitoes in a way that prevent escapees. Multidoor system such that one door is closed before the second door is opened, additional barriers including magnetic curtains, insecticutor and the well-trained staff as the best insurance against escaping mosquitoes all have been put in place.
Security is ensured by structure and design, skills and sense and responsibility of staff working at NIMR Amani insectary
